6 Mistakes You're Making with Commercial Refrigerator Gasket Replacement (and How to Fix Them)

Replacing a refrigerator gasket seems simple — but there are several common mistakes that lead to poor seals, wasted energy, and repeat service calls. Here are the 6 most common mistakes we see, and how to avoid them.

1. Using the Wrong Gasket Size

This is the most common mistake. A gasket that's even slightly too large or too small won't seal properly. Always measure the door opening — not the old gasket — before ordering a replacement. Measure height and width, and note the corner style (radius vs. square). When in doubt, call a professional.

2. Not Warming the Gasket Before Installation

New gaskets are often stiff and kinked from being stored folded. Installing a cold, stiff gasket leads to uneven seating and gaps. Before installation, soak the gasket in warm water for 15–20 minutes or leave it in a warm room. A pliable gasket seats evenly and seals much better.

3. Ignoring a Warped Door

A new gasket won't fix a warped door. If the door itself is bent or misaligned, no gasket will seal it properly. Before replacing the gasket, check the door for warping by closing it and looking for light gaps around the edges. If the door is warped, it needs to be adjusted or replaced first.

4. Over-Tightening the Retainer Screws

Many gaskets are held in place by a retainer strip secured with screws. Over-tightening these screws distorts the gasket and creates pressure points that wear out quickly. Tighten screws until snug — not cranked down. The gasket should sit flat and even all the way around.

5. Waiting Too Long to Replace

A failing gasket costs you money every day it's in service. A poor seal forces the compressor to work harder, increasing energy consumption and wear. Most commercial gaskets should be inspected every 6 months and replaced every 1–3 years depending on usage. Don't wait until the gasket is visibly falling apart.

6. DIY-ing When You Should Call a Pro

Some gasket replacements are straightforward. Others — especially on walk-in units or multi-door cases — require custom fabrication and precise installation. Attempting a complex replacement without the right tools or experience often results in a poor seal and a wasted gasket. When in doubt, call a professional. The cost of a proper installation is almost always less than the cost of repeated DIY attempts.
